First meal in our new house

OK, so tonight we had our first unofficial meal in our new home!
Exciting!!
Of course the girls were sitting on the concrete floor and stairs, with their food on the wire spools. And Ralph and I were walking around talking electrical issues. But we ate our first meal under our new roof!
Little things to be very thankful for.
Thanks Grandma and Grandpa for supper!

Good Grief....

Good grief.
That's what I kept saying as I was trying to get pictures done with the girls today.
I had the bright idea to try and get our Christmas letter picture done today.
Good grief.
It's only October, is it really time for that?
So, I suggested the girls wear their pillowcase dresses that Grandma made for them. I think they are so cute! Of course that was met with , "Why Mom?' Um, because I said so .
"Why do we have to stand here?"
"Why do we have to look this way?"
"Why do we have to smile?""Why can't we climb the tree?"
"Why do we have to take the shoes that don't match off?"

I should have responded - "Why don't you hike your dresses up and tear off running!"
That would have gotten a big smile....
"Why do we have to sit here?"
"Why do I have to sit so close to my sister?"
"Why can't I be in the middle?"
Good grief - finally!

I think I may have gotten one shot that we can use for Christmas - maybe. You'll just have to wait until Christmas to see.

"The Search for God and Guinness" by Stephen Mansfield

I just finished reading the book “The Search for God and Guinness” by Stephen Mansfield. I have to admit the title is what drew me to want to read this book. What does searching for God and beer have in common? By the last page, I learned what they had in common.
This book starts with the history of beer, the theory on how it came about and on to the modern day industry. Also, the role that the Guinness family has played in the beer industry. This book reads much like a history textbook in some places, with lots of dates and names. So, if you do not enjoy that, then this book might not be for you.
What I did learn is that the Guinness family built their brand on caring. Caring for their workers and their families. They gave generously to the church, the poor and needy. They fought social injustices. They provided better housing, health care and cultural gatherings for their workers. Guinness understood that productive workers came from happy homes. Something I think, today’s corporate climate may be missing.
I found this book very interesting.

House Update

I have not done a house update in few days - what a difference a few days make! We have a skeleton! The bones of the house are up.

Here is a view from the front....

Here I am standing in the kitchen, looking toward the living room, out the front window...

Here I am standing near the front door, looking toward the living room and past that is the master bedroom.....

Here I am standing in the living room, looking at the stairs, and the dining room, and past that into the girls room...

And here I am standing in the living room, looking into the kitchen and past that the pantry....

I am officially excited. It has become more real now that I can "see" what the rooms layouts are. I can't wait until this house is our home!

Do you see what's missing?

My baby lost her first tooth today!

Actually she pulled her own tooth today.

*Sigh*

My baby is growing up.

Another milestone.

I'm proud of her for doing it herself.

She didn't even cry.

Looks can be deceiving.

Looks can be deceiving.

You see this sweet little face?
Yes, this one, with the big blue eyes.

She looks so sweet and innocent. Like she has not a care in the world. Certainly not entertaining any notions about marriage. Certainly not worrying on whether or not she will take her husbands new name.

But, that was the conversation I had right after I took this picture. Morgan started asking about Aunt Loretta, and what her last name was right now. So, I told her. She said, "So, she is not a Yoder now?" To which I replied, "Well, yes, she is still a Yoder, but her last name is Troyer now."

Morgan then asked, "Why?"

"Why, what baby?"

"Why did she change her name?"

So, I explained that generally women take a man's last name when they get married. Some women choose to hyphenate their last name with their husband's last name. There are many different choices, it was up to what the wife and husband choose.

To which she quickly informed me, "Well, I'm not changing my name when I get married." With a general cross of her arms and stomp of her foot.

Yes, baby girl, I can believe that.

Through their eyes....

Some days, I just need to stop and ponder what the world looks like through my children's eyes.
A world that is consumed with homework. Friends. Eating the next meal. Nailing the perfect cartwheel.
Learning how to throw a football. Laughing as the wind blows through their hair. Wondering if they can snitch a chocolate chip cookie before supper.
Today I threw football with them. I lay on the trampoline and took pictures with them. I let them do their homework outside. They were allowed a chocolate chip cookie before supper.

I am thankful for a small glimpse of the world, through their eyes.....

Batty week

It's been a crazy, batty week around here.
Monday dawned, and our middle girl has a fever and cough.
She has bronchitis.
Her fever does not break until Wednesday - late.
She misses the whole week of school.
Wednesday evening our oldest girl is running a fever and says her throat hurts.
She has strep throat.
Our youngest, so far, has remained healthy.

Ralph has had meetings almost every night this week.
I have been a nurse all week.

So in honor of our upside down week I took some shots of bats that reside at the farm.

Yes, those are real bats.
NO, I was as far away as possible from them.
There is a virtual tornado of bats every evening - the girls love watching them. They give me the creeps, but I try not to let the girls see me squirm!

And then there was this, this evening.........

And I am reminded of all that I need to be thankful for.
